Procedures Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy is an endoscopy of the large intestine. This is considered a screening test and it should be done at the age of 50 for the first time (male and female). The follow up will be determined according to the patient’s risks after the procedure is done. It is a very important procedure and the procedure is to find and remove any growth found in the colon that could potentially lead to a cancer if left in place. These growths are usually called polyps and look like small trees. Their removal causes no pain during or after the procedure. The entire procedure is done using conscious sedation. In other words you (the pt), will not feel or remember a thing. At the end of the procedure a typed report with pictures, and information, is given to the pt and a copy sent to the primary care physician. Follow up instructions will be printed in the report and given to the pt. 
Risks of the Procedure
- Bleeding – this can happen during biopsy or polyp removal (avoid blood thinners or aspiring for at least
7 days before the procedure and 5 days after) - Perforation – this means a hole in the intestine due to a biopsy or just from the endoscope being pushed in. This is unlikely, but if it happened, Dr. Lugo is a surgeon and he is capable of repairing the damage.
These are the most common complications of the procedure and the ones that we have to watch for. There may be complications associated with the sedatives used an this should be discussed with the anesthesiologist at the time of the procedure. Instructions for Bowel Prep
After the Procedure
- Expect to have some extra gas. This will get better with time.
If you have any bleeding, please let Dr. Lugo know especially if you had polyps removed or biopsies done
If you had polyps removed or biopsies done make sure you have an appointment for follow up, to discuss the results.
Abdominal pain is not normal. If you have any pain after the procedure, notify Dr. Lugo ASAP!
If the colonoscopy was normal, you do not need a follow up appointment with dr. Lugo unless indicated in the papers that you were given or if you prefer to discuss with Dr. Lugo.
